St Helen

Who was Saint Helen?

Helen was born around 248AD and is claimed a native of Yorkshire. Helen ranks as an important figure in the history of Christianity due to her major influence over her son, Constantine the Great, proclaimed Emperor of York in 306AD and the first Emperor to allow Christian worship in the Roman Empire. She is also known for her pilgrimage of Palestine where she allegedly found the true cross that Jesus was crucified on. On the site of discovery, Constantine ordered the building of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
